The territory of El Salvador comprises what was formerly the province of Sonsonate, which joined the municipality of San
Salvador, forming most of the current territory of the country. Both provinces gained independence from Spain, in
1821, by the Captaincy General of Guatemala, and in 1824 merged to form the "State of El Salvador", as part of the
United States of America. In pre-Columbian times, there was an important indigenous nucleus known as the
Lordship of Cuzcatlán, which means "Place of jewelry or necklaces" in the Nahuatl language.
